“All joint pains aren’t serious but don’t ignore them”, says Dr. Aditya Kapoor. Read through this article to understand what joint pains aren’t serious and when do you have to really see a doctor.

Be it hitting the gym, or at workplace or it could your ladies at home; irrespective of the age and gender the number people suffering with joint pains is increasing every year. “A high percentage of these cases are from younger group of the mid-30s and 40s. Most of this crowd aren’t much exposed to direct sun and thus leading to deficiency of Vitamin D. This is one of the reasons for joint pains”, says Dr. Kapoor.

Early morning stiffness or feet not cooperating in routine and pain in joints are key indicators of arthritis – the most common joint condition. The stiffness could also be after sitting for long hours. There could be swelling or inflammation along with pain in some cases. All the above may sound familiar and you’re doing mistake if you accept them as factor of aging and cannot avoid it.

“You seriously have to reconsider the decision”, says Dr. Aditya Kapoor. “The situation will worsen over a period of time leading to join degrade to a level that you cannot fulfill your daily chores. The extent of damage could even lead to disability”, he added.

Research suggests that rheumatoid arthritis – one of the types of arthritis can be halted if attended at the right time. If left untreated, it can lead to cardiac disorders and even heart attack.

Leave it to the doctor to identify if it is truly arthritis or any other joint condition with help of proper diagnosis and medical examination like x-rays and blood tests.

Quick Fact – There are more than 100 types of conditions under arthritis alone. Physical and medical examination will help a qualified doctor to identify the type of arthritis.

Consult an orthopaedician to help you find right treatment along with exercises for all kinds of arthritis conditions. Dr. Kapoor says, “There are cases where patients stop doing regular activities after they are confirmed to have arthritis. Instead, regular activities like a jog or workout actually help you avoid pain and further degradation of joints.” He suggests, “There are ways of treating arthritis condition without surgery like physical therapy, braces and anti-inflammatory medicines.”

Your body has about 300 plus joints connecting bones and there is every possibility for something wrong to happen in these joints. Here are few symptoms/factors that you mustn’t ignore.

Joint pain at night that disturbs your sleep too
Warmth or redness in the joint area. This is due to inflammation
We already discussed about early morning stiffness but it is a serious concern if it takes hours to subside
Intermittent joint pains may not be a real worry but consistent pain certainly needs immediate treatment
Apart from common symptoms, if you see new ones like inflammation in joints with redness, fever, etc. then, see an orthopaedician immediately
When in pain while doing regular chores, you may tend to find new ways of doing the same job to get rid of pain. This adaptation is okay for a day or two but not good on a long term. For that matter, skipping the activities also is wrong
“Joint pains are very common among athletes training hard in the gym or among regular sportspersons. Some of them live it up with painkillers for temporary relief. But, inadequate warm-up before the game or workout, excess workout or play without sufficient rest, very often doing less repetitions with heavyweights, an improper form of lifting weights, and not enough supply of nutrients through regular diet – all these add up to chronic joint pains”, says Dr. Kapoor.

“Against the above reasons for joint pains, some may follow the most appropriate routine and still have pain is something to really worry about and must be brought to our attention for right kind of treatment”, added Dr. Kapoor.

Apart from arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis are other joint conditions most commonly found among athletes. Dr. Kapoor explains, “’-itis’ means burning and hence the names for inflammation in tendons, joints and bursea sack.”

So, it is very important to know the difference what good pain is and when to stop while working out in the gym. Any sharp pain is not a good sign and you should stop immediately. Dr. Kapoor tells, “You generally expect discomfort while putting effort. The fact is that both effort and discomfort go together that leaves a good feeling. Something like a burning sensation of muscle fades off in few minutes after you relax is good. This also brings a positive change in the body as it tries to adapt to changes with physical load.”

Overdoing something could leave soreness in muscles and they need time to settle down. A couple of days rest should allow the muscles to relax as your body were not used to the overload. Muscle strengthening happens when people push a bit outside normal levels. The muscles certainly tear but create new muscle fibres thus strengthening them. If the same activity creates worrying symptoms then, it is always better to seek advice of an expert.

Dr. Aditya Kapoor says, “There is delay at times with onset of muscles, also called as DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness). Performing light exercises after two-three days’ rest should help get back to normalcy.”

The kind of workout doesn’t really matter when you relax as and when body tells that it’s too much. Little modifications like lesser repetitions or using low weights is absolutely fine and you can still achieve better results without doing whole range of movement.
