WALLENBERG‘S SYNDROME

Description

Neurological condition that can develop when damage occurs in a part of the brainstem called the lateral medulla

Symptoms

  • Hoarseness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Hiccups
  • Rapid eye movements
  • Decrease in sweating
  • Problems with body temperature sensation
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty walking
  • Difficulty maintaining balance
  • Paralysis or numbness on one side of the body

Causes

  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Heart disease
  • Blood clots
  • Minor neck trauma

Diagnostic Tests

  • CT scan
  • MRI scan

Treatment

  • feeding tube
  • Speech/swallowing therapy
  • To alleviate pain : anti-epileptic drug gabapentin (Neurontin)
  • Blood thinner : warfarin (Coumadin)
