STREP THROAT

Description

It is a bacterial infection that causes inflammation and pain in the throat

Symptoms

  • Sudden fever
  • Sore, red throat with white patches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Loss of appetite
  • Wollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Rash
  • Body aches
  • Tiny red spots on the area at the back of the roof of the mouth

Causes

  • Bacteria ( Streptococcus pyogenes )
  • Spread through infected person during :
  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Shared food or drinks
  • From the door knob

Risk Factors

  • Young age (mostly children )
  • Time of year ( late fall and early spring )

Diagnostic Tests

  • Physical examination
  • Rapid antigen test
  • Throat culture

Treatment

  • Antibiotics :
  • Penicillin
  • Amoxicillin
  • For throat pain and reduction of fever :
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB )
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol )

Prevention

  • Clean your hands
  • Cover your mouth
  • Don’t share personal items
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat soothing foods
  • Gargle with warm salt water
  • Use a humidifier
  • Stay away from irritants (cigarette smoking )
