It is a vector-borne parasitic disease

Symptoms

  • Anxiety
  • Mood changes
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Insomnia at night
  • Sleepiness during the day (may be uncontrollable)
  • Sweating
  • Swollen lymph nodes all over the body
  • Swollen, red, painful nodule at site of the fly bite

Causes

  • Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense
  • Trypanosomoa brucei gambiense
  • b. rhodesiense
  • Tsetse flies

Risk Factors

  • living in parts of Africa
  • Being bitten by tsetse flies
  • Travelers who visit Africa

Diagnostic Tests

  • Physical examination
  • Tests include:
  • Blood smear
  • Cerebrospinal fluid tests
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Lymph node aspiration

Treatment

  • Medicines used:
  • Eflornithine (for T. b. gambiense only)
  • Melarsoprol
  • Pentamidine (for T. b. gambiense only)
  • Suramin (Antrypol)

Prevention

  • Minimize contact with tsetse flies
  • Local residents can provide advice about places to avoid
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants
  • Inspect vehicles before entering
  • Avoid bushes
  • Use insect repellent
  • Vector control by traps or screens in combination with insecticides and odors
