PNEUMONIA

Description

  1. swelling (inflammation) of the tissue in one or both lungs.
  2. It’s usually caused by a bacterial infection.

Symptoms

  1. cough
  2. difficult breathing
  3. rapid heartbeat
  4. fever
  5. feeling generally unwell
  6. sweating and shivering
  7. loss of appetite
  8. fatigue
  9. nausea or vomiting
  10. wheezing
  11. joint and muscle pain
  12. feeling confused and disorientated, particularly in elderly people

Causes

  1. bacteria
  2. fungus
  3. virus
  4. AIDS
  5. hospital-acquired pneumonia

Risk Factors

  • smoking
  • Weakened or suppressed immune system.
  • being hospitalised
  • steroids and certain medications for cancer, and people with HIV, AIDS, or cancer.
  • cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and heart failure.
  • drug abuse

Diagnostic Tests

  • Chest X-ray.
  • CT scan of the chest
  • sputum test
  • pulse oximetry test
  • bronchoscopy
  • blood test

Treatments

  • Fever reducers/pain relievers
  • Cough medicine
  • Antibiotics.
  • NSAIDS

Medications

  • aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others)
  • acetaminophen (Tylenol, others).
  • paracetamol

Lifestyle Management

  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Stay hydrated
  • Take your medicine as prescribed.

Prevention

  • Practice good hygiene.
  • Keep your immune system strong.
  • Get vaccinated
  • quit smoking
