Description

  • Lipomas are soft, fatty lumps that grow under the skin.
  • They’re harmless and can usually be left alone if they’re small and painless.

Symptoms

  • Growth or swelling on your body
  • Lumps grow slowly
  • The lump be:
  • Soft and doughy to the touch
  • Move easily if prodded with your finger
  • Just under the skin
  • Pale

Causes

  • Genetic factors

Risk Factors

  • Most prevalent in adults between the ages of 40 and 60
  • Genetics
  • Having certain other disorders:
  • Adiposis dolorosa
  • Cowden syndrome
  • Gardner’s syndrome
  • Madelung’s disease

Diagnostic Tests

  • A physical exam
  • A tissue sample removal (biopsy)

Treatment

  • Surgical removal
  • Steroid injections
  • Liposuction
