Cosmetic Jaw Surgery (Orthognathic surgery)
Corrective jaw surgery or Cosmetic Jaw surgery aims at correcting the functional and cosmetic problems that are caused due to underlying jaw deformities. The intended purpose is to improve beauty and personal appearance or self-esteem of a person. Owing to severe bite related issues in spite of using orthodontic braces, orthognathic surgery is the preferred treatment option.
Sometimes the bone deformities are so severe that they may result in jaw mismatch in regard to the size and positioning of the jaw – the end result serious health issues. Sleep Apnea is a health condition that may result owing to extremely smaller lower jaw though this is one of the few causes of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea may result in several health conditions in the long-run. In some cases in which the upper lips are short and the upper jaw is vertically excess – the lips remain open and fail to close. This may on a regular basis prompt undesirable mouth breathing which may further deteriorates the condition. Once malocclusion occurs, it may have very strong negative effect on speech function, which is often accompanied with jaw pain.
Both the occlusion and the jaw positions precisely define the height of the face. The lower half of the face helps in maintaining the aesthetics of the face to a maximum possible extent. There are some specific face symmetries that are considered as non-aesthetic, such as concave mature face and convex bird face – such faces cause social issues if not treated on time.
Doctors, researchers, cosmetic and plastic surgeons have been working relentlessly for years to find the answers to the questions pertaining to the critical aspects that play pivotal role in imparting attractiveness to the face. And thus, they are trying to target those areas or parts of the face that are capable of making a person more appealing, attractive and beautiful. The experts are thus seeking the clues that define attractiveness to know whether some features or a combination of features like cheek bones, eyes, eyebrows or nose make a person attractive.
Orthognathic surgery is the jaw surgery which is performed on the jaw bones in association with orthodontic treatment (this treatment is performed to straighten teeth). The surgery is aimed at changing the positions of the jaws and basically it is a corrective surgery aimed at correcting the deformities of the jaw. This type of surgery is recommended for correcting functional, cosmetic or health issues.
