The perception of noises in the head or ringing in the ears is called tinnitus. It usually occur as a symptom of medical condition such as hearing loss, ear injury or a circulatory system disorder. Though it is not a sign of something serious but can worsen with age and can improve with treatment.
What Causes Tinnitus
To determine the tinnitus causes, the doctor will perform a physical exam including careful examination of ears. Tinnitus occurs when the inner ear cell damage which might be due to the exposure to noise. Other tinnitus causes include drugs, chronic health conditions, ear problems, stress and head injuries.

Tinnitus occurs as a symptom of an underlying medical condition, so it is important to treat that condition. Sometimes the tinnitus remains after treatment then the doctor may recommend various non-medical options to reduce or mask the unwanted noise.
If tinnitus is caused due to earwax, then the doctor will clean the ears or gently flush the wax with warm water. For ear infection, using ear drops or medication can help fight the infection.
Surgery is done in cases of tumor, cyst, or otosclerosis (calcium deposit on the ear bone).
Medications for Tinnitus
Various anti-anxiety drugs called alprazolam can help treat tinnitus in some people.
Using hearing aids can be helpful, if the tinnitus is caused due to hearing loss.
Masking devices play a sound better than the internal noise produced by the tinnitus.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)
TRT is the brain’s natural ability to “habituate” a signal and filter it in such manner that it does not reach conscious perception.
The therapy involves the counseling in which the reaction to the tinnitus is modified.
The relaxation technique that helps to manage stress and is helpful in reducing tinnitus.
The devices which are implanted in the ear are used to treat deafness and can help treating tinnitus-related hearing loss.
There are no effective alternative therapies or supplements that seem to be beneficial to treat tinnitus. But some people try herbal supplements such as ginkgo biloba or minerals zinc or magnesium for tinnitus causes and cures. Also, some experienced relief from acupuncture or hypnosis.
However, it is always good to consult a doctor before taking any of the tinnitus home treatment.
How Can I Prevent Tinnitus?
When ears are exposed to loud noise, then the risk of developing tinnitus increases. So, it is always recommended to protect your ears from loud noise by using hearing protection aids. Try to wear ear plugs or move away from the noise source or else turn it down. With proper hearing aids, you can improve hearing and reduce the irritation caused from tinnitus.
