LIPOSUCTION
Overview
Liposuction is a kind of cosmetic surgery that aims at improving the appearance of an individual by removing the fats deposited in the body and making them appear lean. The surgical procedure uses a suction technique hence the name liposuction. This procedure is employed for the contouring of the different areas of the body: arms, neck, hips, buttocks, abdomen, thighs, calves and ankles, chest and back etc. Liposuction is also known as lipoplasty or body contouring. This is a cosmetic surgery associated with risks and recovery after the surgical procedure is slow and painful. Therefore, one should decide wisely before opting for liposuction or any other cosmetic surgery as a matter of fact.
Types of liposuction
Liposuction is classified on the basis of the specific technique that is employed. The common methods are:- Tumescent liposuction: It is the most common procedure for liposuction. A sterile injection is injected in the areas where the surgery is to be done; the injection contains anaesthesia and fat removing agent. The surgeon makes incisions in the skin through which a thin tube called cannula is inserted. This tube is connected to a vacuum and thus sucks out the fat from the body.
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction: This method is can also be used in association to tumescent liposuction. In this procedure, a low-frequency ultrasound device is attached to the cannula. The emitted frequency emulsifies the fat, following which the fluids and fats are removed with a suction tube.
- Power assisted liposuction: In this procedure, an oscillating tip is used with the cannula. This ensures more precision in removing the deposited fats.
- Laser assisted lipolysis: Laser energy is used to liquefy the deposited fats from the cells which is removed by traditional suction technique. Here the tube is used is smaller and thus its used only for confined areas such as the chins, jowls and face. Laser assisted technique has one benefit over the other techniques which is production of collagen which is the fiber- like protein that helps maintain the skin structure.
