ZOLLINGER-ELLISON SYNDROME

 

 

Description

  • Disease of the gastrointestinal system
  • One or more tumors form in the pancreas or the duodenum
  • These tumors produce large amounts of the hormone, Gastrin

Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Burning, aching, gnawing or discomfort in the upper abdomen
  • Acid reflux and heartburn
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue

Causes

  • Exact cause remain unknown
  • Begins with the formation of a tumor called Gastrinoma
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 1 (MEN 1) is associated with it

Risk Factors

  • A parent or relative suffering from MEN 1

  • Medical history
  • Blood tests
  • Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Abdominal CT Scan
  • Calcium infusion test
  • Octreotide Scan
  • Secretin stimulation test

Treatment

  • Medications called Proton Pump Inhibitors
  • H-2 blockers
  • Surgery (extreme cases)

Prevention

  • There are no preventive measures
  • Regular genetic testing in case of family history may help
