Description

It is caused by mosquito-transmitted virus

Causes

  • Infected mosquitoes which feed on infected birds

  • Impaired immune system

Diagnostic Tests

Treatment

  • Pain relievers (ibuprofen or aspirin)
  • Intravenous fluids

Prevention

  • Unclog roof gutters
  • Remove old tires or unused containers that might hold water
  • Install or repair screens on windows and doors
  • Report any dead birds to local health agency

Lifestyle Management

  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors
  • Apply insect repellent to skin and clothing
  • Use mosquito netting
  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity when mosquitoes are most prevalent
