ROTAVIRUS

Description   

Rotavirus is the most common cause of inflammation of the stomach and intestines (gastroenteritis), leading to severe diarrhea in infants and children throughout the world.

Symptoms   

  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Watery diarrhea
  • temperature of 104 F or higher(children)/adults 103F or higher
  • Seems lethargic, irritable or in pain
  • Has signs or symptoms of dehydration, including dry mouth, crying without tears, little or no urination, unusual sleepiness, or unresponsiveness ( children)

Cause

  • present in an infected person’s stool
  • unhygienic conditions

Risk factors   

  • common in children ages 3 to 35 months
  • adults caring for young children

Diagnostic Tests        

  • Physical examination
  • stool tests

Treatment

  • Vaccination[Rota Teq (RV5) ] ,[ Rotarix(RV 1]
  • infection resolves within three to seven days
  • Preventing dehydration
