RIVER BLINDNESS

Description

  • It is a parasitic disease caused by parasite Onchocerca volvulus

Symptoms

  • Skin inflammation
  • Nodules in the skin
  • Scarred, saggy, or drooping areas of skin
  • Leopard skin
  • Lymphadenitis
  • Eye itching, redness or swelling
  • Visual impairment
  • Unable to distinguish certain colours
  • Eosinophilia

Causes

  • Parasite (Onchocerca volvulus)
  • Female blackfly

Risk Factors

  • Living in and visiting sub-saharan  Africa
  • Missionaries
  • Volunteer health workers

Diagnostic Tests

  • Skin snip
  • Slit-lamp examination
  • Antibody test

Treatment

  • Use of Ivermectin medicine
  • Excision of subcutaneous nodules
  • Six-week dose of doxycycline antibiotic

Prevention

  • Wear insect repellant such as N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) on exposed skin
  • Wear long sleeves and pants during the day
  • Permethrin (insect repellent) can be impregnated to clothes
