Description

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare lung infection caused by bacteria

Symptoms

  • Chest pain when taking a deep breath
  • Cough with phlegm (sputum) that contains blood
  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Night sweats
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weight loss
  • dry cough with or without blood

  • Actinomycosis

Risk factors

  • dental abscess
  • not taking care of your teeth and gums
  • emphysema (a type of lung infection)
  • scarred lungs from bronchiectasis
  • heavy drinking

  • Modified AFB smear of sputum
  • Sputum culture
  • Tissue and sputum Gram stain

Treatment

  • Antiobiotics
  • surgery

  • Eat fewer sugary foods
