Description

Peyronie’s disease is the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis that causes curved, painful erections.

Symptoms

  • A curve in the penis when it’s erect (usually it curves upwards)
  • Erection problems
  • Loss of length or girth of the penis
  • Scar tissue
  • Pain

Causes

  • Genetic causes
  • Beta-blocking medications
  • Repeated injury to the penis
  • Elevations in serotonin
  • Vitamin E deficiency

Risk Factors

  • Heredity
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Age

Diagnostic Tests

  • Physical exam
  • Ultrasound techniques accompanied by intercavernous injection

Treatment

  • Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)
  • Iontophoresis
  • Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (Xiaflex)
  • Pentoxifylline (Trental)
  • Verapamil (injections or topical gel)
  • Interferon (injections)

Surgical methods include:

  • Suturing (plicating) the unaffected side
  • Incision or excision and grafting
  • Penile implants
