Description

  • A fairly common congenital heart defect
  • The blood vessel(ductus arteriosus) does not close soon after birth
  • Symptoms may be minimal or severe

Symptoms

  • Fast breathing
  • Poor feeding habits
  • Rapid pulse
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating while feeding
  • Tiring very easily
  • Poor growth
  • Sweating while crying

Causes

  • No clear cause
  • Genetics
  • Environmental factors

Risk Factors

  • Premature birth
  • Family history
  • Genetic conditions
  • Rubella infection during pregnancy
  • Being born at a high altitude
  • Affects girls more than boys

Treatment

  • Treatment is usually not necessary

Medications

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Infant’s Motrin, others)
  • Indomethacin (Indocin)
