Description

Parathyroid cancer is a cancerous (malignant) growth in a parathyroid gland

Symptoms

  • Bone pain
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Fractures
  • Frequent thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Kidney stones
  • Muscle weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Poor appetite
  • Achy
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Vocal changes like hoarseness
  • Pain in your side, back, or abdomen that doesn’t improve
  • Difficulty thinking clearly
  • Depression

Risk factors

  • family history of parathyroid cancer
  • familial isolated hyperparathyroidism (FIHP)
  • multiple endocrine neoplasia type I

Diagnostic Tests

  • computed tomography (CT) scan
  • ultrasound
  • angiogram
  • sestamibi /SPECT scan

Treatment

  • gallium nitrate which lowers the calcium levels
  • calcitonin
  • Drugs that stop the breakdown and reabsorption
  • Fluids through a vein (IV fluids)
  • Surgery
