PARALYSIS

 

Description

Paralysis is loss of the ability to move one or more muscles. It may be associated with loss of feeling and other bodily functions.

Symptoms

  • Loss of feeling
  •  Tingling or numbing sensation

Cause

  • Accident or a medical condition
  •  Stroke
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Other causes of paralysis include:
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Post-polio syndrome
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Neurofibromatosis
  • Birth defects
  • Spina  bifida
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Lyme disease
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Friedreich’s ataxia
  • Cancer

Diagnostic Tests

  • X-rays
  •  CT scans
  • MRI  scan
  • Myelography
  • Electromyography

Treatment

  • Surgery or possible amputation
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Mobility aids( wheelchairs, braces, mobile scooters)
  • Medications, such as Botox or muscle relaxers( spastic paralysis)
