LEPROSY(N)

Description

It is a chronic, progressive bacterial infection caused by bacterium Mycobacterium leprae

Symptoms

  • Muscle weakness
  • Numbness in the hands, arms, feet, and legs
  • Skin lesions
  • Disfiguring skin sores and lumps

Causes

  • Bacteria (Mycobacterium leprae)
  • Spreads through contact with the mucus of an infected person

Diagnostic Tests

  • Physical examination
  • Skin biopsy
  • Lepromin skin test

Treatment

  • Antibiotics include:
  • Dapsone
  • Rifampin
  • Clofazamine
  • Minocycline
  • Ofloxacin
  • Anti-inflammatory medicines:
  • Aspirin
  • Prednisone
  • Orthalidomide

Prevention

Avoid long-term close contact with an untreated, infected person
