Description

It is a reaction to certain proteins found in natural rubber latex

Symptoms

  • Itching
  • Skin redness
  • Rash
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Scratchy throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Cough
  • Anaphylactic reaction include :
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Hives or swelling
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Wheezing
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Rapid or weak pulse

Causes

  • Direct contact through touching
  • Inhalation

Risk Factors

  • People with spina bifida
  • People who undergo multiple surgeries or medical procedures
  • Health care workers
  • Rubber industry workers
  • Family history of allergies

Diagnostic Tests

  • Blood test
  • Skin test

Treatment

  • For anaphylactic shock :
  • Emergency injection of adrenaline(epinephrine)
  • Oxygen
  • Corticosteroids

Prevention

  • Avoid products that contain latex which includes:
  • Dishwashing gloves
  • Some types of carpeting
  • Clothing waistbands
  • Balloons
  • Rubber toys
  • Hot water bottles
  • Baby bottle nipples
  • Some disposable diapers
  • Rubber bands
  • Erasers
  • Condoms
  • Diaphragms
  • Swim goggles
  • Racket handles
  • Motorcycle and bicycle handgrips
  • Blood pressure cuffs
  • Stethoscopes
  • Intravenous tubing
  • Syringes
  • Respirators
  • Electrode pads
  • Surgical masks
  • Dental dams
