Description

  • Inflammation of the voice box(larynx) from overuse,irritation or infection
  • Two main types – chronic and acute

Symptoms

  • Hoarseness
  • Weak voice or voice loss
  • Tickling sensation and rawness of your throat
  • Sore throat
  • Dry throat
  • Dry cough
  • Swollen glands
  • Runny nose
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Feeling tired and achy

Causes

  • Viral infections
  • Straining vocal cords by talking or yelling more than normal
  • Bacterial infections (rare)
  • Frequent exposure to harmful chemicals or allergens
  • Acid reflux
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Smoking or being around smokers
  • Low-grade yeast infections
  • Excessive alcohol use

  • Having respiratory infection
  • Exposure to irritating substances
  • Overusing your voice
  • Singers
  • Cheerleaders

  • Checking for lesions on the voice box

Treatment

  • Use a humidifier or inhaling steam to alleviate dryness
  • Get vocal therapy
  • Drink lots of fluids
  • Gargle with salt water
  • Avoid screaming or talking loudly
  • Painkillers to ease associated headaches and pain
  • Treat bacterial infections

Prevention

  • Avoid smoking and being around people who smoke
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine intake
  • Wash hands regularly to avoid catching cold and infections
  • Try to avoid toxic chemicals in the workplace
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid clearing throat too often

Lifestyle Management

  • Breathe moist air
  • Rest your voice as much as possible
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid decongestants
  • Moisten the throat
  • Avoid whispering
  • Refrain from smoking and alcohol
  • Avoid excessive consumption of caffeine
