KIDNEY CYSTS

Description

  • Round pouches of fluid that form on or in the kidneys
  • Kidney cysts are almost always benign
  • Can be associated with serious disorders that may impair kidney function

Symptoms

  • Blood in the urine or dark urine.
  • Fever
  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Pain on the side between the ribs and the hip,
  • Pain in the belly or back,
  • Frequent urination
  • Impair kidney function (rare)

Causes

  • Surface layer of the kidney weakens
  • Forms a pouch (diverticulum)
  • Are not inherited

Risk Factors

  • People over 50 years of age are more susceptible
  • More common in men

Diagnostic Tests

  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Kidney function tests

Treatment

  • Puncturing and draining the cyst, then filling it with alcohol
  • Surgery to remove the cyst
