Description

A fungal infection that occurs when Candida enters the bloodstream and then spreads through the body

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Bacterial sepsis

Causes

Yeast( Candida)

Risk Factors

  • Patients with central venous catheter
  • Patients in the ICU
  • Weak immune system
  • Neutropenia
  • Patients who had surgery( gastrointestinal surgery)
  • Diabetes
  • Low-birth-weight babies

Diagnostic Tests

  • Medical history
  • Physical examinations
  • Blood tests

Treatment

  • Antifungal prophylaxis
  • Gluconazole
  • Amphotericin B
  • Echinocandin through IV:
  • Caspofungin
  • Micafungin
  • Anidulafungin

Lifestyle Management

  • Be a safe patient:
  • Speak up,if the skin around the catheter becomes red or painful
  • Ask how long a central venous catheter  is needed,if so how long it should stay in place
  • Keep the hands clean
