Description

It refers to a parasitic infection that causes extreme swelling in the arms and legs

Symptoms

  • Lymphoedema
  • Thickening of the skin
  • Hydrocele
  • Enlarged and swollen limbs

Causes

  • Filarial worms:
  • Wuchereria bancrofti
  • Brugia malayi
  • Brugia timori
  • Transmitted by mosquito:
  • Culex
  • Aedes
  • Anopheles

Risk Factors

  • People living for long time in tropical or sub- tropical areas

Diagnostic Tests

  • Blood tests
  • Microscopic examination
  • Serologic techniques

Treatment

  • Surgery
  • Elevate affected limbs
  • Wrap the limbs in compression bandages
  • Diethylcarbamazine(DEC)
  • Combination of albendazole and ivermectin
  • Bed Rest

  • Avoid mosquito bites
  • Give entire communities medicine to kill and control mosquitoes
